The Worst-Dressed Celebs At The 2024 Tony Awards

Mid-June marks the start of summer, the arrival of fireflies, and, of course, the biggest night of the year for theatre fans everywhere: the Tonys. Academy Award-winning actor and Tony nominee Ariana DeBose returned to New York City for the third year to host the 77th Tony Awards, held at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center. Leading the evening's events with a record-breaking 13 nominations each were "Hell's Kitchen" and "Stereophonic," closely followed by "The Outsiders" with 12 nods.

But beyond tracking our favorite Broadway stars' wins, we were also keeping a very close eye on their fashion choices. With A-listers like Alicia Keys, Jessica Lange, and Sarah Paulson in attendance at this year's ceremony, there was hardly a dull moment on the Tony's red carpet. That said, not every star's look landed as intended. Though celebs like Angelina Jolie and Cynthia Erivo stunned us with their attire, others missed the mark entirely. So, grab your opera glasses and get ready to channel your inner critic as we run down some of the worst-dressed celebs on the Tony Awards' carpet.

Julianne Hough's jellyfish gown needed some fine-tuning

On paper, we love the idea of Julianne Hough's flouncy pink dress. Perhaps paying tribute to the jellyfish fashion trend, the star's whimsical, strapless 'fit featured layers upon layers of wispy ruffles and pastel dreaminess. Our main qualm was with the shapeless tailoring of the design. Though the cascading frills looked gorgeous gliding along the Tony Awards' carpet, a little structure along the bodice would have dramatically improved Hough's overall look.

Alicia Keys' crimson look didn't capture our hearts

No matter if she's wearing a full beat or going makeup-free, Alicia Keys always looks exceptional, but something felt off about the star's red-carpet ensemble at the Tony Awards. From the subtle gradient of her floor-skimming gown to her barely there belt, we weren't completely taken with the "Hell's Kitchen" musician's oxblood gown. Some glittering statement earrings or a bold choker necklace would have gone a long way to add a little extra visual interest to Keys' look.

Brooke Shields' bright-yellow sleeveless gown had some textural disconnect

Brooke Shields is a legend in the fashion industry, but we have to admit we felt a little let down by her outfit at this year's Tonys. Despite the striking hue of her yellow, sleeveless dress, the beauty's sunny look left something to be desired in terms of its texture. We loved the gleaming, tiny sequins and ribbon detailing up top, but weren't exactly sold on the rumpled skirt of Shield's dress.

Ingrid Michaelson's baby-blue gown bored us to tears

There's plenty to love about Ingrid Michaelson's romantic, baby-blue frock — in fact, it's even color-coordinated to the Tonys carpet. However, its repetitive floral pattern was a bit of a snooze-fest alongside her casual side-braid hairstyle. With the right accessories, like sapphire jewels or an eye-catching hairband, we're sure Michaelson could have knocked it out of the park at the 77th Annual Tony Awards.

Erika Woods' floral styling was a touch too matchy-matchy

Actor Erika Woods and husband Assaf Kedem were all smiles on the Tony Awards' carpet, but we had a few issues with Woods' look at the event. Though we loved how well the design paired with her partner's tux, we weren't quite as fond of the almost all-red accessories worn to complement her skirt's floral print. A little variation would have given the final look a much-needed boost, but we'll give Woods extra points for the Carrie Bradshaw-inspired blossom.

Rachel McAdams played it safe with an asymmetrical LBD

Some stars lose points for their bizarre styling choices at awards shows, while others fall victim to playing it safe. In the latter category at this year's Tony Awards was Rachel McAdams. The theatre veteran's black gown was undeniably chic, but it wasn't the most memorable garment of the evening — or at all, for that matter. Aside from its underwhelming qualities, we didn't dig the barely there satin trim along the gown's asymmetrical neckline.

Nicole Scherzinger's scarlet number served up lampshade vibes

Nicole Scherzinger looked beautiful as ever walking the carpet of this year's Tony Awards, but her dress' design was another story altogether. Between the gigantic bubble hem, semi-sheer paneling, and rosette embellishments, there was far too much happening at once in the singer's satiny gown. We enjoyed parts of the star's look — like the draped neckline and ultra-gliz makeup — but ultimately, the bizarre details of Scherzinger's dress earned her a place on our worst-dressed list.

Shoshana Bean's shimmering separates didn't quite gel for us

Thinking outside of the box, triple threat singer, songwriter, and actor Shoshana Bean arrived at the Tony Awards in a sleek, silver-and-white ensemble. It was a risky choice, but we can't say that it paid off for the brunette beauty. Between the awkward length of her skirt's train and the boxiness of her satin top, the poorly fitted pieces reminded us of the slim pickings on a store's clearance rack.

Alana Lintao's lemon-yellow 'fit wasn't our favorite of the evening

Alana Lintao was yet another celeb who chose lemon yellow for her dress design. While the color choice was a definite win in our book, the high-low cut of Lintao's gown felt slightly more appropriate for prom than the Tony Awards' carpet. Perhaps some edgier footwear or accessories would have worked in her favor, but the star's trailing curls, clutch, and silver heels only solidified our assessment.

Kelli O'Hara's bubbly hot-pink look fell flat

Pink is definitely Kelli O'Hara's color, which is why it pains us to add the celebrated star to our Tony Awards worst-dressed list. Though we adored the sweet details, from her earrings to her brooch, we weren't smitten with the dual nature of O'Hara's skirt. Double the hemline doesn't always equal double the fun, and the combination of a bubble peplum mini and trailing, floor-length hem was puzzling, to say the least. Still, O'Hara's offense at the Tonys paled in comparison to other worst-dressed celebs we've seen lately, like at the 2024 Met Gala.
